when i in awesome wonder

August 28th, 2006 by Scott Andreas

First off, welcome, welcome, welcome to your first day of school. I’m sure not all of you are as thrilled as I am, but it’s simple, I’m no longer a student! However I take great pleasure in welcoming you to this semester and year. There have been many people praying for you as you start school this week, both for your academic and spiritual lives. I am excited to see what God will do in your lives…

The name “God” can conjure up so many thoughts and I’m glad that we haven’t found just one description but it’s a multitude of names and descriptions that describe who He is. For those who were at Connexion last night, there was a moment during the service where Pastor Dan put pictures up of our surrounding galaxies. Did anyone else have chills run through your spine? Not that I’ve never realized those things before, but all I could say was, “WOW!!!”

I think the most important thing this semester is realizing that that’s the God we serve everyday. But more importantly that that very God wants to have relationship with us. Let me repeat that, the God who is awesome in wonder wants to have fellowship and relationship with you, me, and Connexion. I don’t care to ask why, I’m just glad that God is on our side.

But it gets even better according to the Bible. This will be the theme for the rest of the year as we study the book of John. As Pastor Dan pointed out in his opening message, God wants fellowship with us so bad that He came in the form of the God-man to walk with and us (and be one of us).

The ugly side of this is you and me. It’s our sin that keeps us from having perfect fellowship with God. But as we’ll study in John, this awesome God of ours came down to die for our sins also.

You know it doesn’t make sense. God, who needs to worry about maintaining galaxies, stars, and planets, wants to spend personal time with me in spite of all my sins. I struggle to grasp my mind around that. But I am very pleased that God loves me so much.

No matter how good or bad your week goes, just remember the awesome God you serve. Let me leave you with the words from my favorite hymn. Sing it while you head to class.

“Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the Worlds thy hands hath made. I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, thy power throughout, the Universe displayed. Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee, how great Thou art, how great Thou art. Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee, how great Thou art, how great Thou art.”
