RIP Croc Hunter
September 7th, 2006 by Scott AndreasIs it just me, or do the weirdest deaths happen around this time of the year? I’m not saying that people don’t die any other month, but it just seems to me that we have some weird occurrences always in September. For example, Princess Diana died in the early morning of September 1 (1997), Mother Teresa September 5 (1997), “911” (2001), and just recently the beloved animal conservationist Steve Irwin (2006). I’m not saying that Steve Irwin belongs in that category of greatness, but it’s weird, an international star randomly losing his life in the month of September in a freak accident…
It reminds me again as it does every year, the briefness of life. I am often reminded how short life can be and it scares me that life can be taken away at any moment. The Bible reminds us that life is short. Let me refer you to some verses.
Moses, an old person, says in Psalm 90:12, “So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom.”
Look in James 4:14, “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.”
The Bible reminds us that our lives are merely a flash and we need to be aware of that. I think this is a great time as we come upon the Memorial of the “911” victims and realize how in the blink of an eye so many lives were changed.
On Sunday night Dan touched on how everything in the early Chapters of John, points to Jesus. In a literal sense, John the Baptist is preparing the way for Jesus. He is pointing to the coming of Jesus. As a matter of fact, everything in the Old Testament is about pointing to Jesus. God is telling His people, “Look out, here comes Jesus.”
I often wonder how our lives are reflecting this. If we know that life is short and that we are waiting for the arrival of Christ our King, why aren’t we doing a better job of spreading the Word?
Our lives should be lived in a manner that points to Jesus, so that those who do not believe will believe. Why now? Why today and not tomorrow? We should take James’ warning very seriously. It is because life will vanish like a vapor. People that do not know Christ must be pointed in His direction because we do not know what tomorrow holds.
As you live your lives this week, remember that there is a sense of urgency. We do not know what tomorrow holds and so our lives should reflect that Jesus is coming very soon. Bring a friend to Connexion this week and give them an opportunity to hear the Gospel.
