Recommended Resources on Surviving Spiritual Deserts
February 4th, 2008 by Dan Waugh
There are a few books that I think would be very helpful if you’re going through a spiritually arid time. The first, shockingly, is by John Piper, When I Don’t Desire God. This is a very practical book and easy to read. The last chapter, “When the darkness doesn’t lift’ is incredible, and every chapter is filled with great insight and practical advice. The second is also by John Piper but is very different. Piper has published a series of four books in the Swans are Not Silent Series. Each of these books has three short bio’s of great Christians who shared something in common. One of these books, The Hidden Smile of God, is about three men who struggles and suffered mightily in their lives (John Bunyan, William Cowper and David Brainerd). As I mentioned on Saturday night, I think Christian biographies are helpful in that thy remind us that 1)we’re not alone in our struggles, and 2) God is faithful, always has been. The third book is one I actually haven’t read yet. I just got it on Saturday and am looking forward to it. The book, Spiritual Depression, is by D. Martyn Lloyd Jones. I’ve been impressed with everything I’ve ever read by him, even if some of the references are really dated.
